Philippines: The Pearl of the Orient

If you are planning a trip to Asia, then you better head towards the most colorful and charming country you'll ever visit--- the Philippines.

Known as the “Pearl of the Orient”, the Philippines is a lush and beautiful archipelago that lies in the southeastern part of Asia. This country is renowned for its scenic white beaches, exotic rain forests, lively festivals, and the friendliness of its people.

Abundant with natural wonders, the Philippines is composed of 7,107 islands. The whole country is divided into three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Luzon is located at the northern region of the country . It is considered as the chief island in the Philippines as it is home to Manila, the country's capital and focal point for business and other financial and government institutions. Other notable places in Luzon include the 2000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces, commonly referred to as the “Eight Wonder of the World,” and the Bicol peninsula, where the world famous Mayon Volcano resides.

Visayas can be found in the centermost part of the Philippines. Famous cities in this region include Cebu, Bacolod and Iloilo. This island is also renowned worldwide for Boracay, located at the northwest tip of the island of Panay. Its blindingly white and powdery sand coupled by cooperative weather conditions make Boracay the most famous of all tourists destinations in the country.

Mindanao on the other hand is the southern island group that also showcases the Philippines' proud and indigenous heritage and culture. Popular cities include Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Pagadian.

The cities in these three main islands offer plenty of regional festivals. These are the Panagbenga or the flower festival of Baguio, the Kadayawan or the thanksgiving celebration of Davao, and the Ati-Atihan --- the Philippine version of Mardi Gras. These festivals or “fiestas” are marked with processions, lively parades, colorful displays of Filipino skill and ingenuity, and other unique and localized activities.

Ultimately, this country is known to be home for one of the warmest and friendliest groups of people in the world. Filipinos are known to be very hospitable and friendly to guests. This unique Filipino trait is evident during fiestas when strangers are invited to partake in a grand feast prepared at home.
